LG Optimus One P500 Gingerbread Update Coming in May

After making a worldwide tour of major carriers, LG Optimus One is about to receive its highly-anticipated Android 2.3 Gingerbread software upgrade. The entry-level handset has become one of the most popular Android devices launched by LG, with more than 2 million Optimus One smartphones sold worldwide, and the number is still increasing
The upcoming upgrade has been unveiled via LG Facebook official account, as the company vaguely stated that the update will be available in May, but no specific release date has been mentioned.

The upgrade of LG Optimus One to Android 2.3 is expected by May end & will be available in the Android Market.”

It seems strange that the LG person said that the update would be available through Android Market, which is not possible, rather than through LG’s own update tool.

Initially, the Korean manufacturer stated that the Optimus One would not receive the Gingerbread goodness because it didn’t meet the minimum hardware requirements.

However, the company came back with an official announcement where it said that all Optimus series smartphones would get Android 2.3 upgrade, although no timeframe has been disclosed.

LG will upgrade all Optimus One smartphones currently using the Froyo OS to the next version of the Android OS, Gingerbread. Details of the upgrade schedule will be announced locally in due course. We sincerely apologize for the confusion and misunderstanding that was caused regarding this issue.”

The Optimus One is powered by a 600 MHz processor and features a 3.2-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen with 262k colors support and 320 x 480 pixel resolution.

Even though it’s a low-budget smartphone, the Optimus One is an all-rounder as it features HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, GPS with A-GPS support, microUSB 2.0, as well as Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP support.

Furthermore, the Optimus one sports an average 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and video recording capabilities. The phone packs only 170 MB of internal memory, but it embeds a microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB, 2GB card included).

Stay tuned for more updates on the subject, as the company reveals further details.

LG start

The LG Star. The dual-core beast from the east that was once a mere twinkle in our eye has managed to find its way to the Engadget mansions, having been lent to us by a very generous (and very anonymous) tipster. It’s clearly a test device, as evidenced by its diagnostics menus and lack of a lockscreen, but there’s no disguising the power that lies within it. We put the Star through a battery of common Android benchmarks and the results were, in a word, outstanding. Basically, Tegra 2 will give anything your current phone‘s running an inferiority complex. Join us after the break as we delve deeper into this upcoming powerhouse of a handset from LG. One thing’s for sure: CES 2011 can’t come soon enough.

efore we get to the raw power encased within the LG Star, it’s requisite to discuss the phone’s external hardware. This isn’t a blade server, after all, and people are going to expect their smartphone to look the part too. Some perfectionists will be put off by the generous heaping of bezel at the bottom of the Star and the quirky spine-like column that spans its rear, but on the whole it’s mostly an unadventurous and safe design, exuding the same uncomplicated slate aesthetic as most of its contemporaries. There’s one device we’re immediately reminded of when handling the Star and that’s HTC’s Droid Incredible — albeit with the slight (major?) difference that LG’s new handset offers a larger 4-inch display.

Firefox 4.0 and Fennec FireFox for mobile with killed action

Having released the fourth Beta development milestone of Firefox 4.0, Mozilla is currently focusing on building the Beta 5 release, while gearing up to the feature freeze stage in the browser’s evolution.

Essentially, the browser vendor is getting ready to decide the feature set that will make it into the final version of Firefox 4.0.

In this regard, some features that have been proposed for the next major iteration of Mozilla’s open source browser might not actually be included into the final version of Firefox 3.6’s successor.

Mozilla certainly has a lot on its hands when it comes down to delivering Firefox 4.0. And fact is that the deadline for the official release is getting closer and closer.

Firefox 4.0 needs to be wrapped up by the end of 2010, and this means that the launch deadline is 3 – 4 months away at least. Yet, Mozilla still has to deliver Firefox 4.0 Beta 5, 6 and 7, at least, although additional Betas could follow.

“A few features are at risk,” Mozilla writes, enumerating the following items:

“- indexedDB unlikely to be included (spec is changing rapidly, security implications to be resolved)

- websockets likely to be included, but only as an experimental & prefixed feature possibly not matching spec (spec changing rapidly with new owner)

- some of the new UI features may not make the cut off

- priority is performance, UI upgrades and support for JetPack SDK.”

But at the same time Firefox 4.0 Beta 5 might not bring with it feature freeze for the browser. Mozilla could push Beta 5 as is, and introduce the feature freeze milestone a tad later in September 2010, but still by the middle of next month.

The browser vendor enumerated some features that are already confirmed for Firefox 4.0, the first already done, with the rest on track to completion:

“Feature complete Firefox 4

- Switch to Tab

- Extension Manager – Functionality there, lots of bugs to fix.

- Notification UI – Geo done, patches on follow up bugs.

- New Theme – Substantially done on Windows and Mac, Linux lagging.

- App Tabs – UI in place, functionality follow ups to get to feature complete

- TabCandy – Landed, but lots of follow up work to do on interactions, integration with other features.”

At the same time, there are also additional features deemed at risk, including Silent updates on Windows; Account Manager, Inspector and Web Console.

For mobile browser Mozila on Friday released the latest version of its mobile browser, Fennec for Android 2.0 and higher and Nokia N900.

This week, Mozilla released Firefox 4 beta 4 which integrated Firefox Sync directly into the browser, and in this version of Fennec, the user launches to a personal start page tied to his Sync account. This page presents the user’s browser history, tabs open on the desktop, and shared favorites. Mozilla is attempting to create a seamless browsing experience between the desktop and mobile screen, and this is the first glimpse of what the pairing of Firefox 4 and Fennec will do.

“The main focus of this release is to increase performance and responsiveness to user actions,” Stuart Parmenter said in Mozilla’s official blog today. “This is being implemented using two major technologies, ‘Electrolysis’ and ‘Layers.’”

Layers is not included in this release, but is expected to be fully in place by the time the first beta comes out. Electrolysis, however, is present in this build, and it lets the browser interface run in its own separate process, apart from the process that is rendering Web content. This is meant to make the interface more responsive while content is loading.

Long-pressing links brings up a menu that lets users either open the link in a new tab or send the link via Email, Twitter, Facebook, or Google Reader. Furthermore, when users press the Android “Menu” button, they are presented with the option to save content as a PDF for offline viewing or for sharing.

Nokia C3

Nokia C3 is a low-budget feature phone that has Eseries written all over it. The handset can easily be taken as an Eseries smartphone, thanks to its full QWERTY keyboard and specific bar form factor.

Still, the similarities stop here, as Nokia C3 is not powered by Symbian or any other operating system.

The Finnish giant included a certain kind of features that turn the phone into a messaging device. Nokia C3 stands out through its embedded social networking services (Twitter, Facebook), Ovi Chat, as well as Wi-Fi connectivity and a QWERTY keyboard.

Announced in April 2010, Nokia C3 hits the shelves in June and is currently valued at 100 Euro without subscription. Nokia fans can choose one of the three available colors: Slate Grey, Golden White and Hot Pink.

Nokia C3 is the “Holy Grail” of chat addicts, or the “Heaven” of texters. Even though I have a crush on Nokia’s Eseries, do not consider my opinion biased when I say that C3 is one of the best low-budget phones on the market. Of course, tastes may differ, but if you’re on for a cheap phone with QWERTY keyboard and Wi-Fi, then this is the device you want.

The Good

Nokia C3 feature phone is based on the Eseries lineup of smartphones, thus it features its specific design. Featuring a full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, and excellent battery, we could say that Nokia C3 embeds the main traits of an Eseries device. Other goodies that you will find if you go for the C3: SNS services (Twitter, Facebook), high quality music sound, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP support, microSD card slot, 3.5mm audio jack port, Stereo FM radio with RDS, Visual radio, and and excellent 2.4-inches display. Add to that the fact that you can get all the above with only 100 Euro and you get the best bang for buck.

The Bad

Well, I would say that the worse scenario for a person not wanting to buy this phone is the low camera module and the lack of a document viewer. Other minor downsides of the device might be the lack of multi-tasking, which is very useful when you use multiple instant messaging services, and the missing smart dialing feature. Also, there’s no charging over the microUSB cable.

Nokia N8 to Land in Limited Number

Espoo, Finland-based mobile phone maker Nokia is expected to start selling its latest flagship device, the Nokia N8, as soon as September 25th, one month later than originally announced. This would be the company’s first Symbian^3-based device from the company, and is expected to land on shelves plagued with various software problems, caused by the fact that Nokia did not completed the implementation of the new operating system. The one month delay of Nokia N8 is also said to have been caused by the fact that Nokia is trying to polish the software solution ahead of the handset’s official launch.

Not only would Nokia N8 land on shelves with the said issues, but rumor has it that only a small number of devices would be delivered to the market at that time, so as to attenuate the impact a buggy operating system would have on the way in which Nokia’s new flagship smartphone is received. The initial Nokia N8 shipment would include the unfinished version of the OS, but it seems that Nokia won’t be late with the release of a software update for the device, so as to fix many of the issues it would arrive with. The first software patch for N8 is expected to land in mid or late November, and should bring forth DiVX support, a new version of the WebKit browser, and fixes for some of the small issues the OS would arrive with. at least this si what Habrahabr reports (via Electronista).

For the time being, however, this remains only in the rumor side. Undoubtedly, Nokia does plan on making the new Symbian^3-based mobile phone available for purchase sometime in late September, but there are no official details available on how the hardware and the operating system would be going along together. With a price tag set somewhere around $600 (500 Euro), the phone might not seem too appealing to end users in case it arrives with a buggy OS, especially at times when Symbian is losing market share in front of rivals like Android or iPhone.
